The Lambert Family home page and Archive - A starting point for all English and Irish Lamberts

<body text="#000000" link="#0000FF" vlink="#0080FF" alink="#00FFFF"> <font size="+3"> <p align="center"></font><font size="5" color="#0000FF"><strong>An Overview <br> </strong></font>This is the NO Frames page for people without the capability to view frames.</p> <p>This page was constructed by <b><a href="andy.html">Andy Lambert</a></b> of <b>Fareham </b>nr. Portsmouth, England (Click on the link on the left to find out more about me). It is primarily to assist other Lamberts, who are researching their branch of the family's history. </p> <p>I am lucky in being able to trace my branch of the family's history, back to around the year 1,000. I was born in London during the forties, grew up around the <b>Wandsworth / Putney</b> area with my brother <b>Geoff</b>, then worked and lived around the <b>Kingston / Weybridge </b>area, until moving to the <b>Portsmouth</b> area.</p> <p align="left">I am very much a beginner when it comes to genealogy, however I have been able (with lots of help) to ascertain the following:-  My father was born at <b>Barking </b>in the east end of London where Granddad had settled after coming across from <b>Ireland</b>. Granddad arrived with little money, but worked until he had enough to bring his seven sisters to England. <a href="gd-group.jpg">Click here for a family picture</a> Granddad is on the left and my father is on the right. Some of Granddad's sisters can also be seen.<br>  </p> <p align="center"><strong><font size="5" color="#0000FF">The History</font></strong></p> <p>Granddad's great granddad had owned <a href="athenry.html"><b>Castle Lambert - Athenry Galway</b>.</a> Owning much land and many magnificent homes, the family had prospered since it had arrived in Ireland from Yorkshire some five generations before. The Yorkshire home had been the village of <b><a href="calton.html">Calton nr. Skipton.</a></b> It was here that the most famous Lambert -  <a href="maj_john.html"><b>Major General John Lambert</b> </a> (of Calton House) was born, He was at times:- An escapee from the Tower of London. The man who introduced the Guernsey Lily to the island of Guernsey. Oliver Cromwell's right hand man, and for a while the second most powerful man in England.</p> <p>Before these, it seems my ancestors had crossed to England with <b>William The Conquer</b>, fighting at the battle of Hastings. Prior to this, they had been land owners in Normandy having originally arrived there as <b>Viking Raiders</b> around 940 AD. The last Lambert I can get back to is <b>Lambert the 1st Count of Mons. </b>It is rumoured that the line can be traced all the way to <b>Mark Anthony </b>via<b> Boadicea, Old King Cole</b> and a whole load of <b>Kings of Europe</b>... but that might take some proving. What is certain is that many everyday things from the Motor Car to horse racing's Oaks Cup (named after Lambert Oaks nr Banstead), have a lot to do with one of us.</p> <p> <img src="images/crest1.gif" hspace="5" align="LEFT" width="234" height="326">I have compiled a database of the Lamberts I have details on, mostly <b>Irish</b> and <b>English</b> with a little <b>French</b>. It is available in Gedcom format - <b>please <a href="1.ged">click here</a></b> to download it  BUT be warned it is a big file (1mb+). You may prefer to  <b><a href="htm/WC_TOC.htm">search it yourself</a></b> .. but please be patent while it loads.</p> <p>It is my hope to keep adding to the file so if you have any information on the the ENGLISH / IRISH Lambert families please send it to me. If it is in file format, then Gedcom or Reunion by <b>Leister Production, Inc.</b> would be nice and these days I use the excellent new Generations 5 from <b>Sierra On-Line</b>. It is that program that produced and maintains the searchable dbase mentioned above.</p> <p>I am also keeping a <b><font color="#FF0000"><a href="help.html">Lambert Help Wanted File</a></font></b> of emails sent to me, by people looking for Lambert information. If you are knowledgeable about genealogy, or a Lambert - please take a look and see if you can help.</p> <p>The Lambert Family Crest shown above left, was sent to me by Jacqueline Lambert of Palmetto USA. Her aunt Rosa had the crest painted around 1960 by an artist in Hendersonville, North Caroline. It can truly said to be "the" Lambert family coat of arms, as it is an amalgamation of many designs used by different branches of the family. As yet I have been unable to link it to a particular line, but can see elements of the Calton, Essex, Galway, London and Wessex lines. If any heraldry experts reading this feel they could help further, I would be pleased to hear from them.<br> </p> <p><b><font color="#CC0000">Please note:-  </font></b><font color="#000000">Most of this information on these pages has been sent to me from other peoples databases.
